On the twenty third of June, the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union.

How do I feel about this – what do I have to say?

What has happened is that a close friend, or a brother, has just told me ‘goodbye’. And it is immensely sad. At one and the same time, I respect that my close friend or brother has a right to live their own life and make their own decisions. And on the other hand it is a painful personal rejection. You don’t want to be with me anymore. Mon frère, mon semblable!

Britain’s departure is an immense loss for the remaining members of the European project. Britain’s vocation should be in ‘leading, not leaving‘. Who better to provide the voice of reason, of pragmatism, of personal freedom, of open-mindedness, of dynamism, of optimism. So many have looked to Britain for leadership, and all are dismayed. Who is it that rejoices? Who is it that benefits? There are none.
